Six independently reviewed UK credit cards across cashback, travel, balance transfer, 0% purchase and low APR — compared on the rate you actually pay.
How we rank UK credit cards
Picking a credit card in the UK is rarely about the headline number. A 0% purchase card with a 22.9% revert APR will cost you more than a 1.5% cashback card if you regularly carry a balance. We rank every card on the realistic, blended cost across a typical 12-month spending pattern — not the marketing rate.
Our editors check four things on every product page: the live representative APR, all annual or monthly fees, the genuine acceptance criteria (so you don't waste a hard search), and the small print on rewards or cashback caps. Anything that materially changes the cost moves the ranking — even if the bank pushes it as a perk.
Representative example: £1,200 credit limit, 34.9% APR variable. Subject to status. UK residents 18+. Terms apply.
Which UK credit card is right for you?
Match the card to the job, not the other way around. If you pay your bill in full every month, a cashback or rewards card almost always beats a 0% purchase card — the 0% period is only worth something if you actually carry a balance. If you regularly travel outside the UK, the foreign transaction fee saved on a no-FX card will dwarf any cashback you would have earned elsewhere on the same spend.
For balance transfers, the headline 0% period grabs attention but the transfer fee is what matters. A 32-month 0% deal at a 3.5% fee on £5,000 costs £175 up front. Pay that balance down in 18 months on a 24-month deal at a 2.0% fee and you save £75 — even though the 24-month window is shorter. Always run the numbers on the fee, not the months.
If your credit file is thin or rebuilding, focus on the acceptance criteria, not the perks. A higher APR is acceptable while you build a clean six- to twelve-month repayment record. Most UK lenders will then offer you a credit limit increase and a meaningful rate review — at which point you can switch to a low-APR card from a position of strength.
Frequently asked questions
What is a representative APR and why does it matter?
Representative APR is the rate that at least 51% of accepted applicants must be offered. The other 49% can be offered a higher rate. It is the most realistic single number to compare cards on — but always check the lender's eligibility checker first to see the rate you personally are likely to be offered before applying.
Will checking my eligibility hurt my credit score?
No. Every card listed above offers a soft-search eligibility checker that has no impact on your credit score. Only the full application is a hard search. We recommend using the eligibility checker first to avoid wasted hard searches on cards you may not be accepted for.
How does Section 75 protection work?
Under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, your card provider is jointly liable with the retailer for purchases between £100 and £30,000 made on a credit card. If goods are faulty, never delivered, or the company goes bust, you can claim from your card issuer. Debit cards do not get the same protection — only chargeback, which is weaker.
What happens to my 0% interest after the promo period ends?
The card reverts to its standard representative APR, applied to any remaining balance. To avoid surprise interest, plan to clear the balance before the 0% period ends — set a calendar reminder for two months out. If you cannot, transfer the remaining balance to a new 0% balance transfer card before the rate flips.
Can I have more than one UK credit card at the same time?
Yes, and many UK households hold two or three at once — for example a cashback card for everyday spend, a no-FX card for travel, and a 0% balance card for managing a large purchase. Just keep your overall credit utilisation below 30% across all cards combined; that is the figure UK credit bureaus weigh most heavily.
